Dividing Assets after Separation

Are you ever prepared for dividing assets after separation?

While we may dream of a life of marital and domestic bliss, things don’t always go according to plan.

Separation and divorce are facts of life. In fact, ABS data shows that in 2021 there was one divorce for every 1.6 marriages. So, if you are considering separation – firstly, please know that you’re not alone!

It can be a difficult time, both emotionally and legally, with many critical things to navigate – such as the division of assets. However, with some careful research and planning – along with an experienced family lawyer in your corner – you can navigate this troubled time successfully.

Finding a Lawyer

Family law is a complex area that encompasses parenting matters, property settlement, domestic violence, dispute resolution and litigation, surrogacy, binding financial agreements, prenups, and more.

Many people have never had to deal with a lawyer until they separate, so it can be a nerve-wracking experience. By choosing a family lawyer experienced in separation and divorce, based on recommendations and reviews, you can have peace of mind that you are in good hands.

Thinking About Separating? Take these First Steps

  1. As soon as you decide to separate, speak to a lawyer specialising in separation and divorce issues. They’ll guide you, offer sound advice, and help you understand the process.
  2. Seek support from family, friends, or a mental health professional as needed to help you deal with your emotions.
  3. If you are a parent, it’s mandatory under Australian family law for you to attempt Family Dispute Resolution before applying for parenting orders (this is not the case for couples).
  4. Work with your ex-partner to reach an agreement about finances, property, and parenting. The ideal scenario would be to negotiate a settlement, rather than have to go to court – which is an expensive and time-consuming endeavour. It’s important to formally finalise these agreements to prevent future claims or misunderstanding.

The 4 Step Process to Determine Division of Assets After Separation

divorce form, drawing of house split in 2 and keys

When it comes to dividing your assets, the steps involved are:

Identify and value your assets, liabilities, and resources

List and evaluate all assets, liabilities, and resources held by both parties. This includes properties, investments, savings, vehicles, businesses, superannuation, debts, and any other financial holdings. You may need valuation experts to help determine the precise value of certain assets – especially if there are disagreements or complex financial structures involved.

Consider the contributions of the parties made through the relationship

Consider financial contributions such as income, inheritance, or property acquisition, along with non-financial contributions like caregiving, homemaking, and support for a partner’s career advancement. The duration of the relationship and the roles each party played in maintaining the household and raising children are also taken into account.

The goal here is to recognise and fairly attribute the efforts and sacrifices made by each party during the course of the relationship.

Consider the future needs of each party

When it comes to assessing future needs, factors such as age, health, earning capacity, childcare responsibilities, and financial resources are considered. For instance, a spouse with limited earning potential or health issues may require additional financial support to maintain a reasonable standard of living.

Similarly, arrangements concerning the care of children, including their educational and healthcare needs, are factored into the decision-making process. The aim is to achieve a balance that enables both parties to move forward with financial stability and independence.

Determine whether the proposed settlement is just and equitable

The court then examines whether the division of assets is fair and reasonable in light of all the circumstances surrounding the separation. This includes assessing the financial and non-financial contributions of each party, their future needs, the welfare of any children involved, and any other relevant factors.

If the proposed settlement aligns with these principles, it is deemed just and equitable, providing closure to the asset division process.

Dividing assets after separation can be a tricky process. However, seeking professional legal advice and engaging in open communication can help facilitate smoother negotiations and ultimately lead to being able to close this chapter of your life for good so you can get on with the next.

A-Z Guide of Alternative Therapies - Exploring the Spectrum of Healing Modalities

It seems we are increasingly seeking holistic approaches to health and wellness. In my own country, an estimated 73% of Aussies use complementary medicine and natural therapies!

From ancient practices rooted in traditional medicine, to modern techniques influenced by cutting-edge research – there really is something for everyone looking to tackle those health problems the natural way.

From Acupuncture to Zoo Therapy, let’s make our way through the alphabet for an A-Z Guide of Alternative Therapies.

A is for Acupuncture -An ancient Chinese practice involving the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote healing. Fun fact: There are over 300 acupuncture points located on the body – each with its own function in emotional, mental, and physical well-being!

B is for Biofield Tuning – If this one makes you think of tuning a radio, you’re not far off. Biofield Tuning involves the use of sound frequencies to balance and align the body’s energy field, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

C is for Chiropractic Care – Chiropractors specialise in musculoskeletal issues, primarily focusing on the spine. Through manual adjustments which are designed to enhance the optimal spinal function and the body’s natural ability to heal, they aim to alleviate back pain, neck and shoulder pain, etc.

D is for Dry Needling – A technique used by some physical therapists – including chiropractors – that involves inserting thin needles into trigger points to alleviate pain and improve muscle function.

E is for Ear Candling – A somewhat controversial practice involving placing a hollow candle in the ear to remove excess wax and improve ear health. Be careful with this one, as it can be risky holding a lit candle so close to your face.

F is for Float Tank Therapy – Otherwise known as sensory deprivation tank therapy, this provides a unique environment for relaxation by immersing you in a buoyant solution, offering a sense of weightlessness and tranquility. Fans say it’s great for improving sleep!

G is for Gua Sha – A traditional Chinese medicine practice where a tool is used to scrape the skin to release unhealthy body matter, stimulating blood flow and promoting metabolic cell repair, regeneration, and recovery.

H is for Hypnotherapy – Hypnotherapy utilises guided relaxation and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness, addressing various issues from pain management to behavioural change.

I is for Iridology – Iridologyinvolves analysing the patterns and colours of the iris to assess an individual’s overall health and potential imbalances.

J is for Japanese Acupuncture – A variation of traditional Chinese acupuncture, focused on gentle needle techniques and meridian balancing.

K is for Kinesiology – Kinesiology combines muscle monitoring with the principles of Chinese medicine to identify imbalances in the body’s energy flow and promote overall well-being.

L is for Light Therapy – Also known asphototherapy, light therapy uses exposure to specific wavelengths of light to treat conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and skin disorders. Some research has also found it to be effective in treating depression.

M is for Massage Therapy – Who doesn’t love a great massage! Massage Therapy involves manual manipulation of soft tissues to promote relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall physical and mental well-being.

N is for Naturopathy – Naturopathy emphasises natural healing modalities, including herbal medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle counselling, to address the root causes of illness.

O is for Osteopathy – Osteopathy focuses on the musculoskeletal system and its interconnection with the body’s overall health, using manual techniques for pain relief and improved function. While chiropractors are more likely to use chiropractic adjustments to correct misalignments, osteopaths focus on manipulating soft tissues through stretching and massage.

P is for Pet Therapy – Life doesn’t get much better than when you’re cuddling a fluffy friend! As the name suggests, pet therapy involves interactions with animals to improve physical and mental health, reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being.

Q is for Qi Gong – Qi Gong, a Chinese practice, combines gentle movements, breath control, and meditation to cultivate and balance the body’s vital energy (qi).

R is for Reflexology – Reflexology targets specific reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears to stimulate healing responses in corresponding organs and systems throughout the body.

S is for Sound Healing – Sound Healing uses vibrations and frequencies to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and restore harmony to the body and mind.

T is for Traditional Chinese Medicine – Traditional Chinese Medicine incorporates acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other modalities to restore the body’s balance of vital energy.

U is for Urine Therapy – While there’s no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness, urine therapy involves the application of human urine on the skin, gums, or as a drink for medicinal purposes. (Gross!) It was popularised in the early 20th Century when British naturopath John W Armstrong used it to treat minor stings and toothaches.

V is for Vaginal Steaming – We’ve got celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow to thank for this unique therapy which involves a woman sitting over steaming herbs to cleanse and revitalise her vagina and reproductive system.

W is for Water Therapy – Water Therapy encompasses various approaches, including hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise, to promote physical and mental well-being through water-based activities.

X is for EXit – Okay, ‘X’ had me a bit stumped, but ‘exit’ acknowledges that some individuals may choose to exit or abstain from certain alternative therapies and choose a more traditional medicine approach!

Y is for Yoga – A holistic practice originating from ancient India, combining physical postures, breath control, and meditation to promote flexibility, strength, and mental clarity.

Z is for Zoo Therapy – Like pet therapy, zoo therapy involves interacting with animals in a zoo setting to promote emotional well-being and reduce stress. The connection between humans and animals in a controlled environment can have therapeutic effects, fostering a sense of connection with the natural world.

As you can see, the wellness world is buzzing with alternative therapies that go well beyond your usual prescription! But as with any healthcare approach, it’s important to consult with qualified practitioners, and integrate alternative therapies into your overall, individualised health and wellness plan.

So, whether you’re floating in a tank or getting your Qi Gong on, embrace the journey to wellness and hopefully enjoy a healthier, happier you!

Donating Hair for Wigs

One of my nieces is a vibrant young woman in her 20s, who wants to make a difference in the world.  She intentionally grew her hair to her waist – a process that took years – so that she could donate it.

before and after of donating hair for wigs

In her own words:

“I donated my hair to make wigs for people with medical hair loss.

On the day of my hairdresser appointment, I was excited about getting a short new haircut. Afterwards though, I did have some pangs, especially when people lamented the loss of my long hair. I really didn’t expect it as they knew I’d donated my hair for a worthy cause. My way of coping with that was to point out that women don’t need long hair to be beautiful.

It gives me great satisfaction to know that my donation helped someone in need.”

How To Donate Your Hair

My niece found a hairdresser through the Sustainable Salons website. Once she typed in her postcode, the site directed her to a nearby hairdresser.

Sustainable Salons is a social enterprise that works with organisations like the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation or the Cancer Council to make real hair wigs,  as well as fundraise for people who’ve lost their hair.

Preparing Hair for Donation

After the hairdresser had washed and dried her hair without using any styling products, she then:

how to prepare your hair to donate your hair for wigs

  • Divided hair into small ponytails around the head and tied them with elastic hair ties. The ties were approximately 2cm down from where the hair was to be cut.
  • Plaited the full length of the ponytail and secured it with another elastic tie at the bottom.
  • Measured the ponytail between the two elastic ties and made sure it was at least 20cm long.
  • Cut the hair 2cm above the elastic, then kept the plait flat and dry.
  • Sealed it into a snap lock bag and posted it to:

Sustainable Salons – Ponytails
GPO Box 322
Sydney NSW 2001

You don’t have to see a hairdresser to donate your hair. If you’d prefer, you can prepare your hair and mail it yourself. Detailed instructions on how to do it are available on the Sustainable Salons website.

What Happens Next?

Once they’re received, ponytails are sorted and graded by hand, according to the colour, hair type and length.

Then, they’re sent to wigmakers and charitable organisations like Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation (AAAF) where they’re turned into charitable wigs for children or to fund life-changing programs.

How is Hair Made into Wigs?

The ponytails are brushed carefully to remove any knots. The hair is then separated into small strands, and a collection of strands is sewn onto a super-thin cloth strip known as a weft. These wefts are sewn onto the sides and back of a wig cap.

It takes at least 10 to 12 ponytails to make one wig. Donations need to be 20cm or longer as length is lost when the hair is sewn into the wig cap.

The difference a wig can make to someone in need can’t be underestimated. As my lovely niece said: “Donating my hair was a small gesture really. I wanted to do more than just send a financial donation. I wanted to give a piece of myself.”

Online Grocery Shopping: 7 ways it will help you save money

Do you prefer online grocery shopping or walking into the supermarket? I’m going to share 7 ways it will help you save money and I why I prefer it.

If only I had online grocery shopping when my children were very young. It would’ve been so much more convenient. No having to time shops in between feeds or naps. No lugging bags of groceries into the house while you’re trying to wrestle children. And then the packing away after an already hectic time.

Once online grocery shopping was introduced here in Australia, I was a convert. I tried the home delivery a couple of times but I couldn’t justify the extra cost and my supermarkets are literally around the corner. I can be there and back within 15 minutes using the click’n’collect service for no extra charge.

But will online grocery shopping save you money? Here are my 7 ways.

A running total of your order

What’s your grocery budget? Adding items to your grocery cart online you will instantly see a running total of your order and if you’re going to stick to your budget.

If you’re likely to go over, you have the opportunity to take out items you probably don’t need or it can wait until the next time you shop.

I bought bath soap today knowing I have one cake of soap left but I’m not likely to run out soap between now and my next shop. If I was going to go over budget, I could’ve easily taken this item off.

You stick to your list

Do you keep track of what you need each week? I keep a well stocked pantry and know when I need something. As soon as I run out, or am likely to run out very soon, I add the item to my magnetic whiteboard on the fridge.

woman checking off shopping list

This helps with knowing what I’ll need for the week ahead for breakfasts, school lunches and evening meals. Also if I’ve run out of toiletries or other household items like laundry powder or dishwashing liquid, for example.

No impulse buys

Supermarkets are masters at putting impulse buys right before our eyes. At the end of each aisle, at eye height, at the checkouts and that markdown rack are all places supermarkets like to tempt us to buy extra.

I’m all for a good markdown but if it’s not on your list and you don’t need it, buying your groceries online will help you fall into their sticky traps.

Also, don’t fall for the online tricks either. They’ll suggest items you may have bought last time but not buying this time and the half price or online only specials are also there to tempt you.

Buy all means, check out the online specials to see if your favourites or items you’d like to try are there but only if they’re on your list.

Higher priced substitutions

I’ve never met a substitution I’ve never liked. The great thing about buying online is that the supermarket wants to keep you coming back and offers substitutions on the products you place in your order.

That is, if the item you ordered isn’t available at the time the order is filled, the order picker will pick as close as possible to your item but the same priced item or better.

I’ve received big named branded goods that I normally don’t buy (because of the price) because they can’t supply the item I ordered.

If anything, it gives you an opportunity to try a different brand to check for quality. Maybe that homebrand item you always buy isn’t so bad after all.

Costly convenience

It’s not only the dollar value of the order the cost of your time. We all know how busy we are lately, right? It’s not only the time you’re in the supermarket but the driving there, fighting for a car park, wrangling children (if you have them and avoiding the treats or bribes which all cost extra) the time to pack it all into the car and lug it into your house.

Depending if you get home delivery or click’n’collect, the cost of your time, fuel etc could be saved plus your peace of mind.

No other spending

Most supermarkets are within a bigger complex be it a shopping mall or smaller suburban shopping centre.

people inside a shopping mall

There’s everything from coffee shops, bakeries, dollar stores and other stores that cater to everyone’s tastes.

When you grocery shop online you don’t have that temptation to purchase things you probably don’t need. Put that money towards a holiday, day out with the family or a special buy at the supermarket like fresh seafood or a big piece of roasting meat (which are all so expensive today).

24 hours per day

I thought I’d throw this one in as it costs me my sanity. There was a time when I religiously did the grocery shopping, in store, every Monday morning after school drop off. I guess it was my me time plus getting a good head start on the week ahead with a full pantry, fridge and freezer.

Now the children are grown up and I’ve been grocery shopping fortnightly for ages, I can shop at any time of the day.

When I went to bed last night at 11pm I had forgotten to place my online order. I quickly jumped online this morning at 6am and the order will be ready for pick up at 3pm this afternoon. It fits in well with whatever else I have going on for the day.

Conclusion

Whether you pay the extra for home delivery or use the supermarket’s click’n’collect service, online grocery shopping will definitely save you money in the long run.

It will help you get everything on your list, stick to your budget, have the convenience of someone else to pick your order saving you time and it will save your sanity being able to shop online any time of the day or week.

Do you love it as much as me?

Famous Australians who are vegan that may surprise you

You might be surprised to find these famous Australians are vegan. Read on to find out who they are.

“I was not raised vegan. I did not become vegan because I don’t like the taste of meat, dairy, or eggs. I became vegan because, one day I had the courage to take responsibility for my choices. I no longer believe that animals are here for us for food, clothing, entertainment, testing or any other purpose” – Author Unknown.

Veganism isn’t just about the food we eat. It is a lifestyle choice which impacts every area of our lives, from the clothes and makeup products we wear, through to the cleaning and other household products we use. Fortunately there is an ever-growing range of options, from vegan collagen to vegan leather!

array of fresh fruit and vegetables on white background

For me, it’s always been about the animals. I love them and won’t even kill a spider!  I have a little clear plastic container I keep just to catch and release them if we find them in the house.

I’m not the only one that is actively avoiding any form of animal cruelty; there are plenty of famous Aussies who feel the same, and identify as vegan.

Tennis player Nick Kyrgios for example, cites his love of animals as the reason why he is vegan, while actor Liam Hemsworth advocates against any form of animal abuse.

In an article with “O” magazine, Portia de Rossi explained that she wanted to contribute to making the world a less violent place through following a vegan lifestyle.

Aussie singer songwriter Missy Higgins is also an avid animal lover. She credits a primary school teacher’s lesson about being kind to animals, as the reason she chose a plant-based lifestyle.

Kindness Towards Animals

Kindness towards animals means that we often have emotional attachments to them.

Sia’s love for her pets made her want to do more to support them. She said that “knowing that cows and chickens could feel and care and empathise, just like my dogs”, was the catalyst for her decision.

She is in good company with The Veronicas, aka Lisa and Jess Origliasso. The sisters have long campaigned for animal rights and choose to eat a plant-based diet for the good of animals, their health, and the future of the planet.

Environmental Concerns

Concern about the environment often compels individuals to follow a plant-based lifestyle.

Today Show presenter David Campbell spoke about this in an Instagram post where he declared that he feels 100% better for being vegan: “I am ethically doing the right things for animals, the planet and our children””.

However what many people are unaware of, is that becoming vegan is about a lot more than avoiding meat.

And even if you aren’t prepared to go totally vegan, you can still make a positive impact in this world by consciously choosing to be “partly vegan” – by choosing products that are created without causing animals to suffer.

animal friendly vegan make up and make up brushes on pink background

From makeup brushes and artist paints, to vegan mascara and skincare, these days we are spoiled by an array of great animal and cruelty-free options.

Being a vegan doesn’t have to be all about sacrifice; there are some fantastic vegan products which have been scientifically formulated to be just as effective, while still being kind to animals.

So while you may not be 100% vegan, it’s definitely worth thinking about the different ways you could live a cleaner, greener, and kinder life!

7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Retire

Have you ever thought about what questions to ask yourself before you retire? Find out more here.

What comes to mind when you think of retirement?  Most people think of the state of their finances, but retirement is so much more than this.

Retirement is exchanging one way of life for another. It’s exciting and challenging at the same time.

While this new stage of life does give you time to pursue your passions, hobbies, and interests, perhaps for the first time, it’s also about managing change – and good planning can make the transition from work to retirement much easier.

How do you know when it’s time to retire?

It’s a good question and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.  According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, most people in Australia retire between the ages of 55 and 69.

Financial considerations are a big part of this decision, but you may also be prompted to transition to retirement when:

  • You’re excited about moving on to the next chapter in your life
  • You don’t want to work anymore and can afford to do so
  • Your mental and physical health demand rest
  • You and your partner are on the same page

Before making the decision to retire, you will want to consider some other questions as well.

Where will you live?

Your choices may include staying in the family home, making a “tree” or “sea” change (relocating to the beach or country), moving closer to family, downsizing to a unit or townhouse, or living in a retirement village.

Retirement villages offer a relaxed, social lifestyle with the security of aged care on site if needed, so it’s easy to understand why they’re so popular.

How will you manage finances?

The effort required to move to a retirement village or aged care facility, or apply for the age pension, can seem quite overwhelming – there is so much paperwork to be done for starters!

Getting retirement advice and assistance from an experienced professional will make it much more manageable. Bill Savellis of Olive Grove Financial Advice is an award winning financial adviser and accredited aged care professional, who can create a personalised plan and work with Centrelink and other service providers on your behalf – so you can relax and get on with the business of enjoying your retirement!

What activities will you enjoy?

Many retirees relish pursuing hobbies such as painting, gardening, golf, learning a new skill or giving back to the community.

older couple taking a selfie on top of a mountain

Others travel abroad or become grey nomads and set out to explore this wonderful country.

Whatever your choices, be sure to include regular social activities as these are important for mental health and wellbeing!

What will be your purpose?

Your purpose is anything that gives meaning to your life. For some, it’s spending time with the grandchildren; for others, it’s helping out in schools, volunteering at a neighbourhood centre, attending community events, or joining a club.

Setting some goals for yourself also creates a sense of purpose. Think about what you want to achieve in the first six months or year of retired life, then also think about your long term plans.

How will you keep active and involved?

Keeping active and involved is key to living well in retirement – what will that look like for you? You might consider:

  • establishing regular activities during the week such as lunch dates with family or friends
  • joining a walking group or finding a fitness buddy to stay active and social
  • boosting your brain power by doing sudoku and crossword puzzles
  • learning a new skill, or teaching skills you already have to others.

How will you manage health issues?

Hopefully you will be able to enjoy your retirement in good health. Regular checkups (GP, optometrist, bowel scan, mammograms, etc) are the best way to pick up any problems early, when they are more easily treated. However it’s prudent to have plans in place should your health decline.

These plans should include an Advanced Health Care Directive, and an Enduring Power of Attorney.

An Advanced Health Care Directive allows you to make your wishes known and gives health professionals direction about the treatment you want. You can appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf.

An Enduring Power of Attorney allows someone to make decisions if you lose capacity to do so yourself. You can appoint an attorney for health matters or financial matters or both.

As you can see, there is a lot more to preparing for retirement than just doing your sums. There is a whole new stage of life waiting for you, and planning is the key to making it just what you want!

How to plan your own foodie tour on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Looking for a foodie tour on the Sunshine Coast? Create your own. Here’s how.

Having been a visitor to the Sunshine Coast, Queensland for over 50 years, I’ve never really been one for doing the touristy thing on every visit. We love nothing more than just hanging out at the beach.

My grandparents retired on the Sunshine Coast in 1969 so every other weekend we would visit from Brisbane and go to the beach for a swim. The only tourist attractions to really see were The Big Pineapple, The Big Cow (which used to be at Yandina), The Ginger Factory (in Buderim in the early days) and the Sunshine Castle in Bli Bli.

Now you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the Sunshine Coast, especially as far as food and alcohol goes. Here’s a way you can plan your own foodie tour on the Sunshine Coast and make the most of what’s on offer, in your own time.

Why plan your own tour?

We visit the Sunshine Coast often. It’s our second home. Having been there so much over the years, it’s our favourite place to visit. I have noticed that it has really come of age as being a foodie destination in South East Queensland so wanted to make the most of my next visit.

When I started researching the foodie tours already available (why reinvent the wheel right?), I noticed most of them included wine, beer or other alcohol destinations and we’re talking a couple of hundred dollars.

I don’t drink alcohol anymore so it really wouldn’t be worth it for me. There were also parts of some tours I liked and parts of others I didn’t. So that’s why I decided to start researching the places I wanted to visit the most and found this amazing website that does all the hard work for you.

How to plan your own foodie tour

South East Queensland Food Trails is a website that allows you to plan and create your own foodie tour on the Sunshine Coast and anywhere else in South East Queensland.

There already pre-planned routes you can take that make the most of the region, for example bicycle tours, walking tours or what’s happening right now. They also include some hidden gems you may not have even existed, in your own backyard!

There are also links to that particular region’s tourist websites for even more information. Really a one stop shop to find out all the information you can about the area you’re visiting.

How it works

You simply choose which region you’d like to visit. Either check out the information already available or click on “Create My Trail”.

Choose which region you are visiting from either the List or the Map, then click which Sub Region. You can select all or on an individual region in that area.

Enter the address from which you’ll be starting at. This could be your home address, if you live in South East Queensland, or your accommodation address.

This is, of course, a self-drive tour and if you wanted to visit places that serve alcohol, choose a designated driver. If there are a lot of you, look at the cost of hiring an Uber driver for the day. It might work out a lot cheaper than an organised tour.

After you’ve entered your starting point address, choose your “Interests”. This could be “All”, dining, markets, cooking schools or other attractions in that region.

Your places of interest are then displayed and then it’s a matter of selecting which places you’d like to visit. Click on each one you’d like to include on your tour.

A map is then created with all of the places you’ve chosen with the distance, time and location of each place.

You can then save the link to return to when you’re out on the road and follow the Google map driving instructions to find your way around.

Conclusion

I’m going to be using this tool more for my own area. There’s really so much to see and do in your own backyard, if you really look hard enough. It will save you money, it will be tailor made for your tastes and you can take your time. The South East Queensland Food Trails website has made the job of planning your DIY foodie tour even easier.

Natural Treatments for IBS

The good news is there are natural treatments for IBS.

If you regularly suffer with gut issues such as bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence, constipation, and/or diarrhoea, then it could be Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

The name implies that it’s a bowel disorder, but in fact it is much broader than that, affecting many of the body’s systems.

IBS can affect anyone, even children, but it does tend to be more common in women.

The Many Causes of IBS

There are many factors which may contribute to the discomfort of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

  • Studies have found that IBS patients often have the parasitic infections Blastocystis hominis (BH) and Dientameoba fragilis. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing is recommended to detect genetic material from a specific organism.
  • After taking antibiotics, a microbial imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract, Dysbiosis, can develop. This is commonly diagnosed alongside BH infections and symptoms include altered bowel motions, pain, bloating and flatulence.
  • Food poisoning or acute gastroenteritis can trigger an overgrowth of short intestinal bacteria in the small intestine.
stressed woman causing irritable bowel syndrome
  • Chronic, elevated stress hormones have a negative impact on your digestion. Your digestive enzyme function is reduced, disrupting the movement of food along the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Food intolerances can cause IBS with wheat, gluten, yeast, dairy, and eggs being some of the most common culprits.
  • A “leaky gut” can occur when there is a weakening of the protein fibres that line the gut wall, meaning that you’re unable to absorb vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

While traditional medical treatment aims to relieve the symptoms (usually with mixed results), naturopathy takes a different approach to IBS – identifying and treating the underlying cause/s so that the symptoms reduce.

Natural Treatments for IBS

As with many conditions, a combination of therapies is most successful in treating IBS.

One of the most important treatments involves restoring digestive acid and enzymes to support your body to break down food and extract nutrients.

Natural supplements may help to soothe and reduce gut inflammation, since IBS patients often have an inflamed digestive tract.

You may be also advised to start taking powerful probiotics to re-establish healthy gut bacteria. Since there are many different strains of bacteria, your naturopath will identify which are the most suitable for your body.

Learning how to reduce stress and anxiety can help tremendously since IBS plays havoc with your mind as well as your body. As a holistic health professional, a naturopath can give you practical and caring techniques, such as relaxation therapy, to reduce the impact of stress and boost your energy and vitality.

If you suffer from IBS and are looking for relief without the need to rely on long-term medication, it’s worth booking an appointment with your local naturopath.

Preparing for the Passing of a Pet

It’s never going to be easy preparing for the passing of a pet but here are a few tips to help make the process a little easier.

Anyone who has owned a pet would agree that they are certainly more than just animals; they become a member of the family, providing endless unconditional love and support.

As pets age and start to slow down, it becomes apparent that the inevitable is approaching.  Whilst having to think and prepare for a pet’s passing is sad, the reality is that we will usually outlive them and have to say goodbye. It’s important to remember that all living creatures do pass on and we need to acknowledge and plan for it.

Social support and rituals are a large part of the grieving process for human beings, but the same cannot always be said when the loss is a beloved pet. Due to this, many people find the grief to be quite lonely and isolating.

As the time approaches to say goodbye, here are some ideas to help prepare and comfort you.

Spend quality time with your pet

Spending time with your pet allows you to start the grieving process in a way that you can control.  At this time, you can allow a few extra indulgences and treats and incorporate visits to favourite outdoor spaces.

Talk to family members about the passing

Talking to family, especially children, and explaining that a pet is sick/old and that they may not be around much longer can reduce the shock when they finally do pass. Answering questions and providing them with appropriate details before the death happens will have everyone better prepared.

Have a trusted vet to assist with the passing of a pet

There are times when a pet may need to be euthanised to prevent them from suffering.  Ensuring you have a good relationship with your vet will allow you to feel comfortable making that decision when the time is right.

Take photos and gather mementos

Now is the time to make sure you have all the photos that you want of your pet as well as maybe getting a paw print to remember them by. When your pet does pass, you can put together a collage of photos and memories to remind you of the good times.

Make arrangements for burial

What will happen after your pet passes? There are lots of options and having this put in place beforehand, saves you from having to make difficult decisions when the time comes.  They can be buried or cremated, though you will have to check that you comply with your local council rules.  If you decide to have them cremated, you could choose a pet urn for their ashes, so you can keep them at your home or other special place.

A place of remembrance

Whatever you decide to do with their remains, having a place to go to reflect and remember your beloved pet is a fantastic way to deal with the grief. A special spot, seat or tree could be used to spark joy.

Preparing for the passing of a pet

There’s no way to remove the sadness and grief that comes when you lose a beloved fur baby. But taking control of the process means that you will be better prepared when the time does come for them to cross that rainbow bridge.

How to upgrade your home for free without moving

Are you outgrowing your house? Feel like you need to move? There might be a way to upgrade your home without moving. It’s what I’ve done over the last 22 years since I’ve been in my house. Here’s how.

When I purchased this house with my (now ex) husband 22 years ago, we had plans to have children eventually one day so a 3 bedroom home was going to be more than enough space. In the 4 years before our children were born, there was a spare room I used with a single bed for visitors, our desktop computer (it was the early 2000’s so desktop computers were still relatively a new thing) and a second bedroom set up for visitors.

How our home started out

In the 4 years before our children were born, there was a spare room I used with a single bed for visitors, our desktop computer (it was the early 2000’s so desktop computers were still relatively a new thing) and a second bedroom set up for visitors.

I thought there was more than enough space for our clothes in the built in cupboard in our bedroom and there was a freestanding wardrobe in the third bedroom and plenty of cupboard space in our relatively small kitchen. No real pantry as such but I certainly could make do (and just quietly, love my small kitchen – there’s less to clean and it functions perfectly).

My ex always though there wasn’t enough storage but not having a lot of clutter, back then, I found it quite easy to fit everything in that we owned.

The converted garage

We were lucky that we had what was a converted double garage under our house that was an entertainment room. There was a built in bar, a pool table, a dart board and a TV. Everything that a young couple, soon to be married needed to entertain family and friends. The downstairs laundry had enough room for the washing machine, a dryer and storage under the internal stairs.

I was an avid gardener back in those days so one of the first things we did was put in a downstairs second toilet. It saved me having to run upstairs to our only toilet if I was in the middle of yard work.

The next thing we did was put in a double carport with a solid roof. There was only a timber structure with mesh to cover and it didn’t provide much protection to our vehicle if it stormed.

Getting a double shed

The next thing we did was put in a double shed in the back yard. This was a huge expense at around $10,000 but well worth it in the end. It is now a really great space for storing garden equipment, a workout space, kid’s wet weather space, out of season clothes, Christmas decorations and tools for my now husband to do odd jobs. (My ex didn’t keep the space very neat and tidy so it was a nightmare to find or store anything so a bit of a wasted space all those years ago. It’s been a great asset to the house and come in very handy. It has allowed any storage that didn’t fit inside the house to be stored in the shed.

In saying that, we have tried to declutter all of these things in the shed. There is no point in holding onto them. My husband keeps it very neat and tidy and uses wall and ceiling space to store things out of the way like his surfboards and gardening equipment.

When the children arrived, sadly the days of entertaining and partying were over so it didn’t take long for the downstairs room to become a convertible space for visitors. We had a convertible lounge/fold out bed that my in laws used when they visited. There was a fridge downstairs so they could make their own tea and coffee. Also that downstairs toilet. They could come and go as they pleased and joined us for meals.

How the house changed when the children came

Upstairs, the third bedroom became the nursery. Two years later, my second child was born so the first baby went into that second bedroom and the new baby stayed in the nursery.

Built-in cupboards were put in both the second and third bedrooms nearly tripling the amount of storage space I now had in my house. Out of that came a linen closet. Something I hadn’t had before but made do with a freestanding wardrobe.

When the children were babies (both born in November), it was hot in the summer and I tried to stay indoors in the air conditioning so the living room became the play room. There was a blow up ball pit, a box of toys each (that were on rotation) and we painted outside and drew at the dining table. As they got older, that downstairs room became their play area with a TV/video player, lounge and our computer (where I started this blog all those years ago).

It was also my sewing space, craft area and where Santa would leave the presents for the children under our tree.

The downstairs room became such a convertible space over the years. The trouble was, it was only ever a built-in garage with a cement floor that the previous owners had converted into that entertaining space all those years before. We had no clue that it could or would ever flood as we hadn’t seen flooding in my home town of Brisbane since 1974.

Making changes after flooding

By my daughter’s 7th year, things were going to change with the downstairs room. Heavy rain came in 2011 that flooded the downstairs room. Carpet had to be thrown out, timber swelled around the walls. We had a terrible mess. Little did I know that over the years we would get even more rain and every attempt at rebuilding the space and reconverting it to something bigger, better and more useful met with more heartbreak.

After the last rain of 2022 where we received a year’s worth of rain in 3 days and we were flooded again, we decided to keep the downstairs room as it was intended and that was a concreted floor garage that has a few lounge chairs and my son’s gaming equipment, ie TV and PlayStation.

The room still needs a bit of work to make it look nice, ie painting walls and ceilings, painting the concrete floor with a non slip paint and a new blind for the window. Just small cosmetic fixes. But the home office/craft space is now in the spare bedroom and that’s a job and a half to sort through.

I’ve been having a big declutter and trying to make the space still calm and that’s been a work in progress. The upstairs living room, which was just a quiet space to sit and read, without a television, is now a homely and cosy space again. We purchased 2 x $79 rugs and repurposed the TV unit to hold all of the sound system and television.

There’s still a bit of sorting and decorating to do but not too much. As it’s coming into winter, the throws will come out and I can give it an update with a few new cushion covers.

Conclusion

You can outgrow a house but you can look at it as rather rethinking a room or space. Ask yourself:

  • Can I repurpose this room?
  • Can I reuse furniture and décor that I’ve already got?
  • If I haven’t used or touched something taking up space in this room, can I donate, sell or repurpose it?

We are so influenced by what we see in magazines, on television and on social media to think that we need a bedroom for every child, a bathroom for every person in the house and a toy room, a walk-in pantry, a kitchen island (and the list goes on). Unless you can really afford to move and upgrade to a bigger house (and bigger mortgage), stay put, enjoy the home you already have and rethink spaces.

10 Tips to Make a Rental Feel Like Home

Tips to make a rental feel like home.

There’s no place like home – but what if you are renting?

It’s still your home, whether it be for six months or six years. It should be a place that you cannot wait to return to after a big day, a place where you can relax and enjoy sharing with friends and family.

Here are a few tips to help you truly feel at home in your rental property.

1. Add a Splash of Green

Having a plant at the front door can be inviting, while placing a fern in the bathroom will exude comfort and homeliness.

Not only do indoor plants enhance the appearance of a space, but they have also been shown to boost mood, increase creativity, improve air quality and reduce stress. So, they don’t just look good – they can help you feel good too!

2. Picture This

Don’t be afraid to hang your favourite paintings or pictures on the walls (if they aren’t too heavy). There is a multitude of options regarding safe hanging hooks that can be removed when you move out.

3. Rug Up

Rugs can make a statement and give a comfortable feel to any space, especially if the property is mostly tile or has wooden floors.

4. Let there be Light

Changing the lighting can enhance the atmosphere of any space. Simply switching out a white light bulb for a softer yellow-toned one can help make your home feel warmer and more welcoming.

5. Give your old furniture a facelift

Repurposing old furniture to suit your new space is a beautiful way to bring the pieces of furniture you love into your new home, with pizazz!

6. Control the Clutter

Extra storage is always a clever idea, so if you do need to purchase new furniture consider investing in pieces that offer built in storage.

7. A Soft Touch

Throw rugs and cushions can be colourful and a fun addition to any couch or bed.

8. Accessorise your rental!

Using candles, books, ornaments, vases and bowls will really spruce up a space and help to make it feel like home for you.

9. The Power of Colour

Never underestimate having a colour theme, and use that as a base to guide your decorating.

10. The Nose Knows

The first thing someone notices when coming into your home is the smell, so light candles and choose home fragrances that make you feel happy.

It is amazing how subtle changes and a little creativity can help you turn a humdrum rental property into a happy haven, a place that you are happy and proud to call home!

Garage Door Repair: DIY Or Professional?

Your garage door offers you great service daily. It conveniently allows you to drive in and out of your home and protects your vehicles from harsh weather elements. Therefore, taking good care of it is recommended to ensure it serves you for longer.

That said, even the best-maintained garage doors develop problems at least once in their lifetime. They could get stuck, become noisy, start moving unevenly, or stop closing or opening. On such occasions, many homeowners may find themselves in a dilemma choosing whether to do the repairs themselves or hire a professional.

Factors That Determine If A Professional Or DIY Garage Door Repair Is Suitable

If your garage door has a problem, immediate repairs are necessary. This is because the door might not perform as it should, which could be a huge inconvenience to you and our family. Also, a malfunctioning door might not protect your vehicles from the harsh weather elements or offer sufficient safety to your home.

Therefore, even if your garage door may only seem to have a minor issue, it’s advisable to restore it as soon as possible. This way, you’ll prevent the issue from developing into a more complicated problem that may be more costly to fix.

If you’re confused about whether to do the repairs yourself or hire a technician for the job, this article could be helpful. Here, you’ll learn about several factors that could determine who’s suitable to do the job. These are:

1. The Repair May Take Time

If you’ve done garage door restorations several times before, you may have gathered adequate knowledge on how to fix any problem. Therefore, it’ll be easier for you to identify the root cause of your garage door issue. Once you’ve done so, you’ll get straight into the repairs using less time to restore your door.

If you hire a professional, they’ll first have to examine the situation then come back later for the repairs with the right tools. If they have other jobs scheduled, you’ll have to set a date for them to come to restore your door.

This means that repairs will be delayed, and you’ll stay longer with a damaged door. In this case, DIY restorations may be quicker if you have the expertise to handle the task.

However, hiring a professional may be more recommendable if you don’t have the experience or proper skills to fix a garage door. Even though you could find videos or articles online to do the required repairs, you’ll take time learning, and any errors could delay the restorations even longer.

Therefore, it’s better to have a technician handle the repairs in this case, preferably a local individual. This means, if you need a garage door repair Mooresville NC or similar services, consider hiring professionals around your area. Such people will get to you faster than an out-of-state technician, thereby finishing repairs quickly.

Besides that, since transport might not be a huge expense to them, they could charge you less than what an out-of-state professional could.

2. Cost Of Repairs

If you have the required skills and tools to restore your garage door, DIY repairs could help you save some money on the cost of hiring a technician. However, if you don’t, you could spend more cash than you would have used if an expert did the restorations for you.

This is because you’ll need to buy tools, some of which can be expensive. Also, if you make errors causing secondary damage to the door, you may incur additional costs if you have to hire a technician afterward.

On the other hand, a professional will report to your home with the right tools at hand. Also, they’ll do the job right the first time, with zero or minimal errors. Therefore, the only cost you’ll have to pay is the final charge you initially agreed on with them.

This means, if you were planning to improve the entire garage or other parts of your home and only set aside a certain amount of money to repair your damaged garage door, you won’t go over your budget.

Besides that, some technicians offer a warranty of service. This way, if the garage door isn’t sufficiently fixed the first time and it develops other issues, you won’t have to pay for repairs the second time.

3. Types Of Repairs

The choice of whether to hire a professional or do DIY restorations on your damaged garage door may also depend on the type of repairs required. Usually, there are some restorations you can handle yourself, while others may need a professional.

For instance, a frozen garage door may only require a hairdryer or heat gun to free it from ice. Also, if only a single hinge is damaged, this may be easy for you to repair. However, if you have multiple malfunctioning hinges, restorations can be complex, and therefore, a professional may be more suited for the job.

Also, broken door panels or springs might need a technician because these tasks require a person who knows how to do the job sufficiently without causing secondary damages or compromising their safety. Therefore, an initial assessment of the problem with your garage door is essential. It’ll help you decide whether to do the repairs yourself or call a technician.

Conclusion

Your garage door requires proper maintenance to ensure it stays in good shape for longer. However, these doors sometimes get damaged or malfunction even if you’ve taken great care of them. On such occasions, it may be challenging to decide whether to hire a professional for the repairs or do the restorations yourself.

If you’re in such a dilemma, this article provides some factors that may help you identify who may be suitable for the job. They include the restorations’ costs, the types of repairs required, and how much time the task may take.

6 Home Upgrades That Can Improve The Value Of Your Home

If you’re planning to sell your house fast and at a better price in the future, you need to improve your home’s value by considering upgrades. Here are 6 home upgrades that can improve the value of your home.

6 Home Upgrades That Can Improve The Value Of Your Home Domesblissity.com

There are many home upgrades you can do to maximize the value of your home. However, it’s crucial to note that not all upgrades can be recouped. With that in mind, make sure to choose upgrades wisely to get the best value for your investment.

If you’re confused with the available options for you, below are the home upgrades that you can consider:

1. Spruce Up Your Kitchen

It pays off to consider both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your food preparation and cooking space when it comes to kitchen remodeling. Revamping your kitchen space should equate better workflow and movement to accomplish its primary purpose. Hence, you should consider the comfort level, air ventilation, lighting, and overall layout.

The cost of kitchen upgrades can be expensive, but you don’t have to install new appliances just to give your kitchen a makeover. The prices depend on whether you prefer a luxury or midrange upgrade like updating your plumbing. For instance, if you plan to replace your water heater, you can find out more here.

There are also cheap kitchen renovations you can do, and these include updating your cabinet knobs and drawer handles and painting your outdated wooden cabinets with a neutral shade. These can go a long way in making your space feel fresh.

2. Replace Your Old Roof

Putting on a new roof will help you earn a big ROI. Because your roof is one of your home’s critical elements, it’ll be a top concern for most buyers. In fact, an old or poorly-maintained roof can be a deal-breaker.

There are some options you can consider when it comes to an unreliable or leaky roof. Depending on your budget, you can either replace your entire roofing system or hire roofers to repair some parts of it.

Choose a roofing material that’s suitable for the climate you usually experience in your locality. If you have a hot climate, the best roofing system includes clay tile, metal, or asphalt shingle. Metal and slate roofs are highly recommended for cold climates, resisting extreme temperatures, hail, wind, storms, and even fire.

3. Remodel Or Renovate Your Bathroom

Simple bathroom upgrades can increase your home’s value. However, if you have an old house, this task can be expensive and complicated, so it’s best to consider if it’s necessary.

6 Home Upgrades That Can Improve The Value Of Your Home Domesblissity.com

When you decide to update your bathroom, you can just change your old plumbing fixtures or add tile backsplashes. Other smart changes you can make include adding tile flooring and upgrading your lighting fixtures.

If you opt for a complete bathroom makeover, it involves tearing out the walls, putting in some additions like a jacuzzi, and hiring a contractor. Some big additions you can consider include heated floors and a new bathtub.

Hiring a professional contractor specializing in bathroom renovation is a good idea to get expert advice. A good contractor knows where to source excellent quality bathroom fixtures at reasonable prices. Make sure to obtain a rough estimate of the material and labor costs to avoid surprises. You might want to compare at least three bathroom remodeling contractors and interview them before signing anything.

4. Add Home Automation Or Smart Technology

A property with smart home features is always a plus for most buyers, especially the millennials. If you want your home to boost its value and stand out in the real estate market, it’s time to add smart devices in your home.

One of the smart additions you can consider is the installation of smart thermostats. Although it’s nothing new, the latest generation of smart thermostats comes with an app, making it easy to use and set up. It gives you control of your home’s temperature wherever you are.

Make sure to invest in home security with automated alarms, sensors, and other relevant security features. This way, you can see what’s happening inside your house even if you’re on vacation. Adding smart technology or home automation can help secure and modernize your home.

5. Enhance Your Curb Appeal

In real estate, first impressions matter. Improving the curb appeal of your home can be as easy as scrubbing your home’s siding. It doesn’t always have to be pricey to be effective. You can also install a new front door to improve your home’s look.

If you want a wow factor, some well-placed vegetation and shrubbery and a well-kept lawn can do the job for you.

6. Add A Deck

The cost of adding a deck may depend on the materials you use and how big or small it is. If you have a deck, consider a new finish or adding clever deck designs to make it more attractive to your home buyers.

A porch or deck is great to have. If prospective buyers can picture themselves relaxing in the space or find it entertaining, it makes your home more appealing.

Conclusion

Your house is your biggest investment, and you want to ensure that you’ll get the best possible price for it once you decide to sell it. To achieve that, it’s essential that you consider the listed home upgrades to make your house more appealing to your potential buyers and get it sold in no time.
