If you want to renovate your kitchen, take into account the flow of your cooking space and at the same time the area you will allot for it. Here are some kitchen renovation ideas that could help you in coming up with the best cooking space.

Apply the “work triangle”

The “work triangle” is the good circulation flow of the three appliances you see in the kitchen. These include the refrigerator, the oven or hob, and the sink/dishwasher. In planning your kitchen, you must apply this “work triangle,” which is adequate for food preparation, cooking, washing, and storage. This layout makes cooking inside the kitchen easy as everything will be handy and in close proximity.

Opt for a U-shaped kitchen layout

A U-shaped kitchen layout follows the “work triangle.” In this layout, you can make the most of your kitchen. You have enough areas for preparation and cooking. The middle is left spacious, and you could move quickly and comfortably. A U-shaped kitchen layout is perfect for those who love to prepare and cook food every day. Moreover, you will have a lot of space for storage that will keep your kitchen organized and neat.

Build an island

If you have ample area in your kitchen, build an island, which is very helpful in multitasking. The island can be utilized for food preparation or eating breakfast. Some islands also have a built-in oven. You could also incorporate a second sink in the island, which makes your food preparation and cleaning up utensils easy and fast.

They feature a wide selection of superior quality marbles that could make your kitchen island appealing and attractive.

Have an easy-to-maintain backsplash

The backsplash is the area that receives most of the grease from your oven and stove. To help keep your cooking area tidy, you must clean the backsplash always and remove the dirt and oil. It is advisable that you choose a backsplash that is not just aesthetically beautiful but also easy to clean.

Provide open shelves and hook rails

You can cook comfortably and fast if you have easy access to your cooking materials and condiments. You may build open shelves near the oven/hob to accommodate your spices and other cooking utensils.  Likewise, you may put hook rails on the walls near your oven, in which you could hang your pans and pots. In case you do not want to expose your pans and pots, use the lower cabinets near the oven.

The best cooking area in your kitchen will definitely inspire you to prepare and cook for your loved ones. Moreover, having a functional and appealing kitchen can make your house beautiful and increase its value.

How to Organise Deep Drawers

When you start pricing them, drawer units of any kind are expensive. They are often narrow and the drawers aren’t deep. You can often find second hand filing cabinets being given away for free or for very little money but unless you have files to hang, they’re just a big deep drawer space, that is, unless you know how to organise deep drawers.

How to Organise Deep Drawers

I recently made over my designated craft and office space and had a 2 drawer filing cabinet. I decided to remove the hanging files as I don’t receive much paperwork that needs filing anymore. Most of it is sent electronically and I file online. I didn’t want to go and spend the money on a new set of drawers so decided to make the most of this filing cabinet.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

We were going for a grey colour scheme in my office/craft space so my husband gave the front of the filing cabinet drawers and cabinet itself a quick spray with grey spray paint.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

As you can see, filing cabinet drawers are a little weird in their design. The front of the drawer is quite high but the sides aren’t. If you were to fill those drawers with loose items, they’d most likely get caught as the drawer closes and opens. The best thing to do is create compartments to fill the vertical space within the drawer.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

Take the measurements of the drawer, that is, the width across, the length from front to back and the depth of the actual drawer from the bottom to just under the the lip of the front of the filing cabinet. Look for suitably sized containers with lids at your local dollar store to fill the space. You might find two long but not so deep containers or 4 smaller ones. Remember to take your drawer measurements with you and experiment with different sized containers.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

I filled my large containers with fabric and I had enough space on top of those containers to store my button and beads containers. The drawer slides open and shut easily without losing any of the contents.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

For the top drawer of the filing cabinet I wanted to keep all of the different crafting bits and pieces I use. Things like embroidery cotton, scissors, glues and tapes, sewing notions like interfacing, quilting rulers. A little bit of everything. I usually have a good stock of used boxes I keep for the children’s crafts and for general repurposing so I played around with the configuration of the boxes and trimmed the tops so they were all the same height.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

I picked up a roll of pretty wrapping paper and wrapped all the boxes which doesn’t take very long at all.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

It was just a matter of playing around with what fit best in each box. (It’s still a work in progress and as I use the materials in each box, I’ll find what works best.) Everything is in it’s spot and easily within reach. I know if I’m wanting to embroider, the embroidery threads and needles are all in one box, same as the lace trims, etc etc.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

I had 3 smaller plastic containers destined for another job but they fit in the front area of the drawer to hold things I need to put my hands on fast and easily. Things like the glue, sticky tape, glue gun, drawing pins, tape measures, unpicker, pins, glasses etc. There are 2 containers on the right that are on top of each other. I just lift the top container off to get the contents in the box underneath.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

To look at my ordinary filing cabinet you wouldn’t think that I have nearly my entire craft supplies in easy to see compartments within those two drawers.

How to Organise Deep Drawers www.domesblissity.com

I also have deep drawers in my kitchen and I used baby formula tins to keep baking and cooking supplies in plus two tiers of large plastic containers for my basic flour, sugar and icing sugar. The second drawer keeps all the boxes of breakfast cereal, kid’s plates and other tall containers.

Think of the humble filing cabinet as a purposeful storage option before you decide to get rid of it. Think of the ‘vertical’ space and how best to make the most of it. Reuse cereal and other small boxes to organise your different craft supplies plus other containers you might already have in your home.

My pantry makeover

Its been a couple weeks now but I'm only just getting around to blogging about my pantry makeover. I've got a pretty small kitchen, which I don't mind but I have THE WORST PANTRY in the whole entire world. That is it, pictured above and for someone who loves to cook and bake as much as I do, Its ridiculous trying to keep everything in this small space. The shelves are deep and high and not a standard size for most shelving systems.

I had food in baskets in just about every cupboard in the kitchen. I've put up with it this way for years now, occasionally having a clean up but usually just piling everything into a basket when I bought the shopping home and then pulling out every basket to find what it was I was looking for. It didn't worry me. I just needed to find a better way.

Upon looking in the shed one day, I looked at all the baby formula cans I was saving 'just in case'. The two drawers under the cupboard space in my kitchen are quite deep and I wondered if they would fit.

They fit and I can stack two on top of each other. All of my baking needs, nuts, seeds, pulses, flours, sugars etc are all in these wonderful baby formula tins. Everything fits just beautifully. I just keep the products in their plastic bag, sealed with a clip and then put in the tin.

All the boxes of cereal and kid's 'crockery' is in the bottom drawer. They can help themselves to cereal, drinks and the odd ice cream whenever they like.

As for the three shelves, I headed to my local discount department store and picked up 6 stackable, wire baskets of varying sizes for just over $30. I measured the cupboard width and height and took the tape measure with me to ensure the baskets would fit. I needed some smaller ones for cans and larger ones for larger packets and boxes.

The sauces, coffee, spreads etc remained pretty much unchanged. It was working well as it was.

The next shelf up was for cans, stock, smaller jars of cornflour etc. I've kept the space on the side for dog treats and bird seed.

The top shelf is for lunch box treats (excuse the photos - a bit shaky with the mobile phone), pasta and noodle packets and other bits and pieces.

So, after years and years, all the food is finally in one spot in these three areas. Oh, I do have a plastic tub full of baking supplies like cupcake papers, piping kit etc and my spice jars above the microwave but I've got the extra space now and they are both in separate areas and easy to grab. You won't find any fancy paper lined shelves or matching containers in my pantry. Just a practical, usable storage space with everything I need in one space. See, I knew those baby formula cans would come in handy. Now what to do with the other 20 or so I have in the shed!

My top 5 kitchen appliances

With all of the appliances on the market these days, you’d need another room built onto the house to store them all! Cake pop makers, fairy floss makers, hot dog makers, icy treat makers, Mr Maker makers (sorry, that’s just silly). It seems they bring out a new appliance every day. I haven’t weakened to buy any but rather prefer to keep my top 5 appliances that I use over and over, nearly every day and they have multiple uses.

1.  Stick Blender

Ever since the stick blender was invented, I’ve owned one. What a marvellous invention. Does the job of a couple of appliances but takes up little space. I’m on about my third one in about 20 years because I gave them a good work out when the children were babies. I was making my own pureed vegies for them every day. I whip cream with it, blend soups, crush ice, its my milkshake maker, puree fruit with it, smooth a lumpy gravy or sauce smooth. Its my favourite and for less than $20 for a standard blender without attachments, its good value.

2.  Slow Cooker (Crockpot)

Winter or summer, my good old slow cooker gets a good workout. I’ve had mine for about 13 years and its wobbly with only 3 feet but it does the job. In winter, its perfect for slow cooking cheap cuts of meat to tender, melt in the mouth consistency. Things like stews, casseroles, roasts, braises, curries, chillies, pulled pork/beef/chicken. Its great for doing your vegetables like potato bakes, corn on the cob, potatoes in jackets and cooking your harder, root vegetables. I like doing a Chicken Parmigiana in the slow cooker as well as any other dish. Mostly any recipe can be converted for cooking in the slow cooker. Just reduce the liquid. And don’t forget your sweets. I have steamed individual plum puddings, you could do a bread and butter pudding or other types of baked fruits and custards.

Its just as wonderful in the summer months because it won’t heat up your kitchen like an oven will.

3.  Sandwich Press

Another one that’s used way more than any frypan or skillet pan I have. My sandwich press has a a ridged top and flat bottom, perfect for frying pancakes or fritters with little or no fat as the surface is non stick. We’re forever making pancakes and that’s how I cook mine. Other than toasting sandwiches, its great for toasting focaccias, wraps, burritos, enchiladas, hamburger buns, English muffins or thick toast. I love to cook grilled, marinated meats as well as meat kebabs, steaks, burgers, sausages or satay. I’d be lost without mine.

4.  Pie Maker

I bought my pie maker about 15 years ago. Its a bit of a luxury item but its been given a good work out over the years and I’m sure its going to be a God-send as my boy grows older and his appetite increases. You can use frozen packaged puff pastry to line the bottom and create the tops and fill with any leftovers you have. Leftover stews, casseroles, curries, pastas and sauces. Fill the pastry with a mixture of egg and add grated cheese and bacon and you’ve got my version of a Ned Kelly pie. Fruit that’s starting to turn, toss in a pan with a little sugar and soften then add to the pastry for a sweet pie. You don’t need pastry. You can use bread, tortillas, lavosh, or go no pastry at all. Just give an extra spray of oil to help with the non stick. A great time saving appliance to help put together a lazy meal.

5.  Electric kettle

I think I might be the only person in the world who hasn’t bought one of those coffee pod (Krueger) machines. My friends have them as does my sister and yes, they make a good cup of coffee but all I see happening is me drinking about 10 cups of nice coffee every day and not being able to sleep at night. I’m happy with my instant coffee at home plus my cups of tea made with tea leaves or bags and shout myself a nice cup of coffee when I’m out and about (or visit my friends or my sister more often!)

So there you have it. The only other appliance I have which hasn’t been pulled out at all this winter is my breadmaker. It has been given a good  use over the years but haven’t seemed to use it this year, not even for proving dough. I might change that this weekend.

What are your favourite appliances?

Do you have a cupboard full or are lured by the gorgeous pastel colours of new appliances coming out all the time?
