16 ways to reuse ice cream containers

Save your money and reuse what you already have. Don’t waste it on new plastics from the store. These containers are perfectly okay to reuse many ways around the home. Here are 16 ways to reuse ice cream containers and how you can decorate them.

Save Money and Reuse

I was at a dollar store on the weekend with my husband picking up some ribbon and a packet of paper straws. I went up aisles and aisles of plastics and junk wrapped in plastic and wondered what did we ever do before dollar stores? Oh, that’s right. We reused things from around the house like biscuit tins, cardboard and cereal boxes and ice cream containers.

I keep a lot of things in ice cream containers like food, hair ties, craft items, medicine and ointments, bits and pieces, kid’s games, use them for gardening and they’re the best thing for the children when they need to vomit (sorry to mention that but they are).

DIY Lego & Toy Storage

If only I could go back in time. A time when there wasn’t a block of Lego in my house. I’ll never forget my son’s teacher in his first year of school saying how wonderful it would be for him to have Lego. Uggghhhh! I wished I’d never listened to her. I had to come up with a DIY Lego & toy storage solution asap.

Sure, it’s great stuff and he loves it, not as much as I would like him to but he has created some amazing things from it and some amazing messes! It doesn’t matter how much you tell him to pick it up, there’s always one little piece, just waiting to be stood on by Mumma when she goes in to check on him at night. Ouchie! That and his other toys were really getting to me so while I was making over his room just recently I decided to organise everything with this very easy DIY Lego and Toy Storage unit.

This is the before shot. My husband was given this metal trolley and it was perfect for my son to wheel around a working surface for him to create his Lego on but with the mesh top, the small pieces just fell through. He also has a collection of plastic army men, Matchbox cars and other bits and pieces. I did have a few of those plastic baskets but same thing. The small pieces always fell through. I was on the hunt for absolute ages for suitable baskets or containers for all those bits and pieces and I mean for ages! I always tried my local op shops and second hand outlets but with no luck. The discount department and dollar stores never really had anything I wanted either only if you wanted to part with big bucks.

I did however find these! Can you believe it? Cat litter trays. I was at the dollar store looking for something else one day and I saw these for $2 each! They were perfect. The perfect size and no holes for small pieces to fall through. The cream tray was to put on top of the trolley so any creations my son had made could be put on there. (The OCD side of me would’ve preferred this to be black also but no such luck. I was just excited to have something suitable so I grabbed it.)

There are four separate trays. One for WIP Lego projects (he also has a 3 drawer storage unit just for Lego), a tray for his miscellaneous toys, a tray for his army paraphernalia and a tray for his Matchbox cars and they fit the trolley perfectly.

I think these are Lego Bionicles, from memory, but I’m so pleased we’ve got an organised space for him to work in, it’s mobile and all for the low price of $10, the cost of the plastic trays. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box, literally, and look for storage boxes in other sections of your store. Let’s see how long he can keep it this organised and how long it is before I don’t need to visit the ER to remove a piece of Lego from the sole of my foot! (Just kidding.)

What did we do before Tupperware?

Women probably never spoke to each other, never entertained, never baked or, more importanly, had more money than they knew what to do with. Just kidding. It paved the way for the direct selling system, gave stay at home Mums an income they wouldn’t have had available to them and women all over the world enjoyed meeting up for a good old Tupperware party.  I’ve loved Tupperware all my life. I went to a party last Sunday and it was heaps of fun. This demonstrator wasn’t so interested in telling us all what we could do with the lovely new range but rather what was on special and what was going to be available should you have a party.  But that’s not the point of this post.

I’m in awe of so many pantries and kitchens and how well organised they are. I can remember having the full range of Tupperware Modular Mates for my pantry some years ago and my pantry was in pristine condition. I didn’t take them with me when I moved but I’ve gone back to old fashioned ways of making do with how I store things in my pantry without the unnecessary expense of Tupperware and other plastic products.

What we used to do

Years ago, meat used to be stored in a meat safe. My mother grew up with one of these. Meat was salted and cured in many different ways and not a bit was wasted.

Flour was purchased in sacks made from cloth. This cloth was then used for so many things like tea towels, aprons and even children’s clothes. Nothing was wasted.

Other food products were left in their box or container and just stored in the pantry as is. Now that’s a novel idea? (Sorry for the sarcasm but sometimes I think we were brainwashed into thinking that we needed all this Tupperware when for hundreds, even thousands, of years before us, food was stored perfectly well without all this plastic.

Old tins and boxes

I can remember my grandmother having very little Tupperware. I think she had the salt and pepper shakers and that’s about it. Instead, she reused other containers to store her food in, for example, margarine and yoghurt containers for stewed fruit, metal tins for cakes and biscuits, glass jars for anything from buttons to rice, syrup cans for hair pins or in my grandfather’s garage. The list goes on.

My pantry is in a bit of a ‘state’ at the moment and needs a good tidy up, but you can see from the above few examples, you don’t need plastic ware to store goods in your pantry. The box they were purchased in works just fine. Pegs or bag sealers clamped on the plastic bag are okay. I’ve got shredded coconut in an old dog biscuit container and baking items in old glass jars.

But never let it be said that I always do everything right. I weakened for a couple of items from the party on Sunday and I did buy a Shake It Quick and some Snack Cups in pretty colours.
