DIY Blank Board Books

Tutankahmun and Cleopatra

I’ve loved the hard covered board books the kids have had over the years. They’re a great introduction to reading and easy for them to hold and turn pages. Now that the kids are approaching 7 and 5 years of age, the old board books are being replaced by normal books and I no longer have a need for them, other than recycling onto someone else who might want them. (Although they’re looking a bit worn and dog-eared.)

I went to my local church car boot sale and came across a few books including these old board books (I paid about 25 cents for the lot) which were in slightly better condition than the ones I had.

The reason I decided to do my own was because my nearly 7 year old daughter was writing some serious stories on scrap pieces of paper she had stapled together or old notebooks that had half ripped pages. I saw these blank board books on ebay for anywhere from $15 to $20 and that’s where I got the idea to do my own. They can be used as a great way for kids to write and illustrate a story and to keep the book as a keepsake or just to have a bit of fun.

Paste the entire page of the board book with PVA craft glue. Using recycled white paper, coloured paper or anypaper you like, stick paper to board book. Smooth over gently to remove any air bubbles. (I had a few but it didn’t detract from the look of the book.) Once glue has dried, trim around board book to remove excess.

This was the first one I made. The edges could do with a little sand with a fine sandpaper.

I adhered a piece of bias binding along the spine of the book to cover the join in the paper and finish it off. You could use bias binding, fabric, tape, anything, for this part.

These blank board books will come in very handy for my budding author. It will also assist in her developing a better understanding of story telling and comprehension.
