Sunday Session - I'll cry if I want to

Its a birthday week in the house this week and I've been crying because I want to. Not sure what's up with me, whether its PMS, menopause or subconsciously missing Mum because her and I celebrated my birthday by going out for morning tea or lunch. I've had a few blue days this week but am able to pull myself out of it, just. The only thing that keeps me going some times is the kids.

I'll still enjoy my birthday. Its still my favourite day of the year (even though that number is getting higher and higher, quicker and quicker). A quick lunch at my local club with some Mums from school, who have become good friends. And no doubt a couple of hand drawn cards and notes which will mean more to me than anything.

Who knows? I might even bake a cake.

Sunday Sessions - Let It Grow

I'm taking a break from my walk down the 1970's lane this week at Sunday Sessions with Cass Can Sew, especially after I watched "The Lorax" again last night for the second time. Cass's post last week reminded me of how many great tunes there are in kid's movies these days and the songs in "The Lorax" and the whole message of the movie is so relevant in more ways than one.

Before kids, I was never a fan of Dr Seuss. I always read a lot as a child but could never take to Dr Seuss. Whether it was the illustrations or all the rhyming but now I LOVE it. The kids love it too. I still don't like the illustrations or the whole 'feel' of Dr Seuss but the messages are just wonderful and a great tool for teaching children to read with rhyme.

But I do love the last song from the movie "The Lorax", "Let It Grow". It means more to me than just planting a seed.

"All you gotta do,
All you gotta do is live your life
Be true, live your life, be true
And never be afraid, never be afraid to grow, grow."

Great messages, beautifully animated, vivid colour, good talking points for kids (my 8 year old daughter wants to know what 'photosynthesis' means now - I was just too tired to explain last night) and very entertaining. Thank you  Dr Suess!

Sunday Session - Getting used to it

I originally had 5 songs picked out for today's Sunday Sessions post at Cass Can Sew and I could've kept going. Once I get started on music from the 70's, I just go on and on. I decided to cull it back to one and maybe share one a week and what it means to me. This one by Roger Voudouris was one of my most favourite songs from high school and I thought the title was a little appropriate for this week, getting used to getting back to the school routine.

I have each of my children at a different school (within less than 5 minutes of each other), I've been rushing from one to the next for drop offs and pick ups and so far, so good. All I need now is for one to get sick or for after school activities to begin and there we go. Don't worry. I'll hum along to Roger's song and get used to it. (Just quietly, my hair is blowing around a bit like his in the film clip from all the running around I'm doing!) And to think I thought he was really cute all those years ago?

I'm off to check out what everyone else is listening to this Sunday at Cass Can Sew.

Sunday Sessions - School Days

Its time for another Sunday Sessions over at Cass Can Sew and with only one more day after today before school starts I thought I'd share some of the songs that remind me of my school days. I'd be here forever so I'll do one from my primary school years, one from the high school years and one that my children sing along to now (and I hope won't be the one that reminds them of their school days).

Primary School Years - 1969 to 1975

This was a toss up between David Essex (the biggest love of my life when I was 11 years old) and Bay City Rollers. They were my One Direction. I thought if I posted a Bay City Rollers song you may not like me anymore!

High School Years - 1976 to 1979

So many songs remind me of high school during this period. People like ABBA, KISS, Frank Zappa, the disco songs. My high school had a radio club and every break the Ian Dury and the Blockheads song "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" was played.

My children's school years - 2010 to .....

What can I say?

Sunday Sessions - Happy Australia Day

source
In light of the fact that next Saturday will be our national day, Australia Day, I thought I'd take a trip down memory lane to my all time favourite Australian bands.

I feel very lucky to have been a teenager in the late 70's and young adult through to the 80's. Besides the disco, new wave, punk and mod trends of these times, there was the good old Aussie band that did the 'pub' tour. There were the famous Aussie exports like the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, AC/DC, Air Supply and INXS but those bands I used to see for about $8 a ticket at the suburban pub were just the best. So many great songs, great memories, great rock'n'roll beat and songs that remain etched in my memory forever.

So, my three (I'll only list 3 - there are so many) favourite Australian band's songs from the late 70's and 80's, in honour of Australia Day, are:

Cold Chisel - "My Baby" 1980
(They were starting to get a bit more famous in these days so only played the bigger venues.)

The Angels - "Take A Long Line" 1978

Mental As Anything - "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" 1979

Sunday Session - I Dreamed a Dream

Who remembers the Sunday Session music link up from Do I really Want to Blog? I used to link up there all the time.
Well I've got good news! It's starting up again tomorrow here at Cass Can Sew!
So if you blog and have a music related blog post from this week, get ready to link it up tomorrow! ;-)

The beautiful Cass from Cass Can Sew has revived the great Sunday Session linky party. I think I may have linked up to this one a couple of times and was sad to see it go. Music is one of my greatest passions. I can't live without it. Any kind of music. It stirs up so emotion in me, none as much as what "I Dreamed a Dream" did yesterday when I saw Ann Hathaway sing it in the movie "Les Misérables" starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

I love a good musical but "Les Misérables" had never been high on my list of must sees. I know so many people who have raved about it. It's been to my capital city many times but I just never bothered. "Phantom of the Opera" remains one of my most favourite musicals of all time but after seeing the movie version of Les Mis yesterday, Phantom might be knocked out of first place.

Besides Susan Boyle doing a very good rendition of the song in the UK television show "Britain's Got Talent" it just summed up how powerful this song really is. It means more to me now when I see Susan sing it. She deserves every success she has received. And what a powerful performance by Ann Hathaway, even if she wasn't on screen for very long.

"There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong."

I dreamed a dream, for a very long time. I dreamed that love would never die. It did. I dreamed a dream my life would be, so different from the hell I was living. But I'm dreaming new dreams now.
