I just thought I'd add this post on the blog as it may be of use to someone. It's all about repairing cracked plastic.
Last year sometime, my husband (his motorbike is pictured above) was turning his bike around in a street at about 2kms per hour and he slipped and dropped the bike. You wouldn't believe the damage that was done to the bike, including a crack to the front plastic fairing. He told me he was going to try 'soldering' it. I just said "yeah okay" (whatever). I didn't know what he was up to.
He went to the local hardware store and bought a soldering iron for $25 and a pack of cable ties for $5 and 'soldered' the cable tie to fill the crack on the fairing. (Prior to this he had drilled the crack back slightly with a grinding attachment on his drill so the melted cable tie would fill the crack better.)
I was very impressed and thought this may come in handy some time. He probably saved himself a couple hundred dollars by doing it himself. So, if you ever need to repair cracked plastic, give this a go. It'd be no harder than using a hot glue gun.
Possible uses:
- Cracks in plastic bumper bars
- Plastic refrigerator shelves and containers
- Plastic hub caps
- Plastic kitchenware
- Plastic toys
- Plastic garden tools
THat's pretty clever of him. Tell him I said so. :)
