With all of the appliances on the market these days, you’d need another room built onto the house to store them all! Cake pop makers, fairy floss makers, hot dog makers, icy treat makers, Mr Maker makers (sorry, that’s just silly). It seems they bring out a new appliance every day. I haven’t weakened to buy any but rather prefer to keep my top 5 appliances that I use over and over, nearly every day and they have multiple uses.

1.  Stick Blender

Ever since the stick blender was invented, I’ve owned one. What a marvellous invention. Does the job of a couple of appliances but takes up little space. I’m on about my third one in about 20 years because I gave them a good work out when the children were babies. I was making my own pureed vegies for them every day. I whip cream with it, blend soups, crush ice, its my milkshake maker, puree fruit with it, smooth a lumpy gravy or sauce smooth. Its my favourite and for less than $20 for a standard blender without attachments, its good value.

2.  Slow Cooker (Crockpot)

Winter or summer, my good old slow cooker gets a good workout. I’ve had mine for about 13 years and its wobbly with only 3 feet but it does the job. In winter, its perfect for slow cooking cheap cuts of meat to tender, melt in the mouth consistency. Things like stews, casseroles, roasts, braises, curries, chillies, pulled pork/beef/chicken. Its great for doing your vegetables like potato bakes, corn on the cob, potatoes in jackets and cooking your harder, root vegetables. I like doing a Chicken Parmigiana in the slow cooker as well as any other dish. Mostly any recipe can be converted for cooking in the slow cooker. Just reduce the liquid. And don’t forget your sweets. I have steamed individual plum puddings, you could do a bread and butter pudding or other types of baked fruits and custards.

Its just as wonderful in the summer months because it won’t heat up your kitchen like an oven will.

3.  Sandwich Press

Another one that’s used way more than any frypan or skillet pan I have. My sandwich press has a a ridged top and flat bottom, perfect for frying pancakes or fritters with little or no fat as the surface is non stick. We’re forever making pancakes and that’s how I cook mine. Other than toasting sandwiches, its great for toasting focaccias, wraps, burritos, enchiladas, hamburger buns, English muffins or thick toast. I love to cook grilled, marinated meats as well as meat kebabs, steaks, burgers, sausages or satay. I’d be lost without mine.

4.  Pie Maker

I bought my pie maker about 15 years ago. Its a bit of a luxury item but its been given a good work out over the years and I’m sure its going to be a God-send as my boy grows older and his appetite increases. You can use frozen packaged puff pastry to line the bottom and create the tops and fill with any leftovers you have. Leftover stews, casseroles, curries, pastas and sauces. Fill the pastry with a mixture of egg and add grated cheese and bacon and you’ve got my version of a Ned Kelly pie. Fruit that’s starting to turn, toss in a pan with a little sugar and soften then add to the pastry for a sweet pie. You don’t need pastry. You can use bread, tortillas, lavosh, or go no pastry at all. Just give an extra spray of oil to help with the non stick. A great time saving appliance to help put together a lazy meal.

5.  Electric kettle

I think I might be the only person in the world who hasn’t bought one of those coffee pod (Krueger) machines. My friends have them as does my sister and yes, they make a good cup of coffee but all I see happening is me drinking about 10 cups of nice coffee every day and not being able to sleep at night. I’m happy with my instant coffee at home plus my cups of tea made with tea leaves or bags and shout myself a nice cup of coffee when I’m out and about (or visit my friends or my sister more often!)

So there you have it. The only other appliance I have which hasn’t been pulled out at all this winter is my breadmaker. It has been given a good  use over the years but haven’t seemed to use it this year, not even for proving dough. I might change that this weekend.
