If you’ve never heard of an ‘extreme’ milkshake or ‘freakshake’ you don’t know what you’re missing. I’ve been reluctant to order one when I’ve been out at a cafe here in Australia only because of the amount of calories in one but you can make your own extreme milkshakes or freakshakes at home.
Extreme milkshakes are the latest thing to get your taste buds tingling and your heart pumping at all cafes around Australia. They are a combination of a milkshake and cake, candy, sprinkles and anything else you’d like to load on top of them.
The Aeroplane brand have created their own range of milkshake flavours to help get you started on putting together a super loaded milkshake. Flavours include Salted Caramel, Lamington (chocolate/coconut), Peanut Butter Fudge and Choc Hazelnut. It’s so hard to choose so you need to try all of them. They are perfect on their own in a standard, run-of-the-mill milkshake or used as topping over your favourite ice cream but they are perfect in a supershake.
You don’t need any fancy glasses or cups. Firstly, make your milkshake using any kind of milk, the topping and ice cream, which is optional.
Using a glass (or a coffee jar as I did) swirl your desired topping flavour around the inside of the glass and pour in your flavoured milk.
And then the fun begins. You don’t have to go out and buy fancy ingredients but I did, just for the experiment. Top your milkshake with a scoop of ice cream and/or whipped cream. For this peanut butter fudge extreme shake, I added a Reece’s Peanut Butter cup chopped in half and chocolate loaded with peanuts. This was enjoyed by my son. (I did taste though.)
My daughter opted for the Lamington flavour. (In case you don’t know, a Lamington is a very famous Australian cake. A sponge cake dipped in chocolate icing and rolled in coconut.) I swirled the Lamington flavoured syrup around the glass, poured in the milkshake, topped with cream and added a chopped Lamington finger and a chopped “Bounty” bar (coconut chocolate bar covered in chocolate, similar to a “Mound” bar in the USA).
It’s kind of like a complete morning tea or snack in one cup. You can make it as rich or decadent as you like. You can top with a cupcake or brownie, cookies, any kind of candy bar, fairy floss, sprinkles, pretzels, nuts, M&Ms, whatever.
Just remember to get your cholesterol checked after consuming. Just kidding. They are wonderful as a treat and so much cheaper if you make them at home yourself.
Disclaimer: I was sent samples of Aeroplane’s flavoured milkshake syrups for review. All thoughts, photos and opinions are my own.

I look at them and think…no way could I have one (I am not a milk shake fan anyway) but I sure know how popular they have become. There is a local cafe here who is well-known for them and have been in the local paper showing off the various ones they come up with. Yours look creative and original and I bet the kids loved them, I didnt realise these new flavours were out. My goodness! Thanks for linking up to Life This Week 4 Anne!
I’m a bit the same Denyse. I’ve never ordered one from a cafe, always much preferring to have a nice cup of coffee but as far as afternoon tea goes, having one of these ‘all in one’ cake/milkshakes, the kids love them and I kill two birds with one stone, literally! lol
