I have to say I’ve got one of those husbands that women only dream of. You send them to the store for one thing and they get that one thing or spot a bargain and bring it home. As was the case when I sent my husband to the supermarket and he spotted a 3 kilo bag of pet mince for $3 and I decided to make homemade dog food in the slow cooker.
Our two 4-legged babies are pretty spoilt and enjoy the dog food shaped in a log but at $7 a roll it’s a little expensive. By the time I added rice and frozen vegetables to this pack of pet mince, I think it would’ve cost me about $5 and I had enough for months. It would be great for big dogs.
I could’ve quite easily cooked this in a pot on the stove top but I love my slow cooker that I can set it in the morning and check it a few hours later. I did inherit 2 slow cookers from my late mother in law which are the perfect size for my family so my big old slow cooker I’ve had for about 20 years was perfect for cooking this in. I’ll keep this slow cooker just for this purpose not that I think it would matter that it was used for human meals.
It’s a great way to use up vegetables that may be a bit on the old side. You could swap rice for pasta and add wholegrains if you wished. I managed to get 2 cups of dog food into a ziplock bag and I got 5 of those bags. A little bit goes a long way with my two dogs. A word of warning though. I’ve since read that a sudden change in your dog’s diet can cause constipation, which it did in our case, so we have gone back to the dog roll and only using a little bit, topping it up with this dog food.

This will come in handy for so many people – I don’t regularly make my dog food, but there are many times when they’re not feeling well or on a medication or teething with my new pup when I do.
Thanks for sharing with us at Throwback Thursday!
Mollie
Thanks Mollie. I’m sure it will come in handy.

My mother in law used to do this for the family dog after he got diabetes. Thanks for sharing on #FridayFrivolity

Well I never thought to make my own dog food!! Hmmmm….looks good enough to eat ourselves! LOL! Thanks for sharing on My 2 Favorite Things on Thursday!! Pinned!
Haha Elaine. I think the husband was worried when he saw it in the slowcooker, knowing it was the pet mince he bought. The dogs would’ve started biting his ankles I think if he tried to eat it! Thank you for your comment and for pinning.

We adopted a dog last year and I made a huge batch of dog food for him, but then less than a month went by and we realized he wouldn’t work out for us (very sad – he was a cute little guy, but bit our daughter three different times, so we knew we had to let the agency find him a child-free home). I’ve pinned your recipe in case we have another furry friend join us soon!
Congratulations!
Your recipe is featured on Full Plate Thursday this week. Enjoy your new Red Plate and have a great weekend!
