A little earlier this year, I decided it was time to start getting out and about and start doing things I hadn’t done for myself for years. My priority will always be the children but every second weekend when I’m on my own, I could really go for doing something with people like me. I’d heard of Meetup before when the children were small when I was looking for a playgroup that suited my needs so I jumped on line and found a group called “Travel Bugs”. A group created for women aged 35 to 65 who love to travel. I’ve always loved travelling and thought this could be exactly what the doctor ordered.

When this weekend trip to The Beach Resort in Cabarita Beach was announced, I ummed and ahhed for a bit and said “what the heck, just go for it” and I’m so glad I did. I had such a fantastic time. The group organiser, Karen from The Village Travel organised the whole thing, accommodation for 30 girls, drinks on arrival, restaurant bookings and coordinating everything else. I car pooled with 2 other ladies and we got down there in around an hour and a half.

The accommodation was spectacular and with all the creature comforts. Best part about it, it was right on the beach. Each night I slept on the sofa and let the waves rolling in lull me to sleep. It was just beautiful. So relaxing. My roomies, Dianne, Mary, Kerry and Isabelle were really great and we had some great conversations and all got on really well.  It was like my prayers had been answered. We were all around the same age, had similar relationship stories, had all traveled (and still wanted to travel) had similar health problems and so much else in common. It was fantastic.

After we had arrived we all made our way to the Penthouse apartment for drinks and nibbles. It had started raining but that didn’t dampen our spirits. We all listened to each other’s stories of travels, drank and ate until it was time to go for dinner to the restaurant downstairs. (By this time I could feel a cold had really taken hold of me so headed back home for an early night.)
The next morning the sun was shining and the ocean blue. Most of the girls were heading to Byron Bay for the morning but I decided to stay in and just enjoy the view and peace and quiet. It had been a busy week with both children having a tummy bug and now me with a head cold. I still enjoyed just reading and taking a walk on the beach.

Cabarita is my kind of beach. No high rise buildings, no ‘golden arches’, just a friendly little seaside town with a beautiful beach. We finished the weekend away with a night out at one of the local Thai restaurants and we were noisy and laughing and had a fabulous time. The wine and bubbly were flowing and the food was great. I’ve made some wonderful new friends and hope to catch up with them on a lot more weekends (or longer) away.
