If you would’ve asked me 5 years, 1 month and 29 days ago if this day would ever come, I would have laughed at you, and lo and behold, here it is. My youngest child has gone to school for the very first time today. To make it even more exciting we’re starting at a new school so also a first day for my daughter starting Grade 2.

I was really surprised at how quickly they woke up, ate their breakfast and got dressed. My boy, in particular was way more excited than I thought he’d be. Even dropping him off, he just went on his merry way.

Me? I shed a little tear and thought he’s still too little to be going to school but he’s clearly not. Very Mr Independent and my daughter quickly found a friend from Girl Guides and sat next to her. It was all relatively painless, just like pulling a band-aid off quickly.

And gone are the days where the kids will stand nice and tall and sensible for a photo. They were goofing around so much this morning I couldn’t get a decent photo. I guess it’s a sign of the times. Better they have a sense of humour and like to goof off in front of the camera rather than be all serious. Hopefully they’ll save the serious stuff when they’re in class. Here’s wishful thinking, especially with my boy!

And me? What will I be doing on this first day out of prison, first day of freedom, with no children at home?
