I was given a bit of a reminder by my friend Lee from Mummy Issues: Part 2 when she asked if anyone made their own yoghurt. I used to all the time and then stopped about 12 months ago. I go through a lot of it. I think it was because my sister had given me some of her leftovers which lasted a while and then I couldn’t be bothered or the kids went off it.

It’s very economical to make your own yoghurt at home and there’s many ways you can make it. I have an Easiyo system which I picked up for about $1 from the op shop and several containers to make the yoghurt in from garage sales for a total cost of a couple of dollars. It’s a great investment.

One of the most popular brands, Easiyo, has many different flavours. There are quite a few other brands on the market including those from Aldi. To make your satchet go even further, I use the following recipe substituting most of the yoghurt mix with powdered milk. This makes your $3 to $4 yoghurt mix last a lot longer.

DIY @ Home Yoghurt Recipe

1.1/4 cups powdered milk (either full cream or skim)
2 tbs yoghurt mix (I always use plain Greek so flavours can be added)
cold water

  1. Half fill the 1 litre yoghurt making container with cold water.
  2. Add powdered milk and yoghurt powder and shake until dissolved.
  3. Fill the container with more cold water until full.
  4. Place container in yoghurt maker and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Flavours:

  • Vanilla and honey
  • Any fruit puree and/or diced fruit
  • Add powdered drink mixes like Milo, Quik, Sustagen
  • Flavoured ice cream topping

Stay tuned for recipes using yoghurt. Thanks Lee for getting me back onto it. It’s definitely a money saver.
