If you’ve been following along at home, you’ve probably guessed by now that rock music will be in the theme for our wedding. It’s not a ‘theme’ as such. Just something that the fiance and I are passionate about. I really didn’t figure on having a wedding cake ‘topper’ but due to the fact that I can’t leave Pinterest alone, these wonderful ideas keep popping in my Pinterest feed.
The above picture popped up and I thought how fantastic would they be on our cake. At nearly $50 for the two I thought better of it.
I just so happened to be looking on ebay for something else and I found these three chipboard guitars for $7.50 and I thought I’d have a go at transforming them into cake toppers. Our budget is pretty low and pretty much every cent is accounted for. If I can find a way of doing it myself for cheap, I will. How it turns out is an entirely different matter. It may not look like the $50 pair of guitars but I was happy with them and so is the hubby to be.
I used the third one to practice on using different colouring methods. I thought nail polish might’ve given a nice gloss finish but it just soaked into the chipboard. Felt pens worked just as good as anything plus a chalkboard pen for the white parts.
See, not too bad. Just don’t look too closely.
I couldn’t believe my luck on a recent thrift store visit. This little bag of tied black ribbons were only 50 cents and at the time I didn’t know what I’d need them for and that they’d probably come in handy for something and they certainly did. I tied it onto the neck of the ‘groom’ guitar and secured it with a little PVA glue.
For the veil on the ‘bride’ guitar, I used a bit of lace I had in my stash which I cut off a small piece. With a needle and thread I gathered the veil and tied off into a knot.
It was then just a matter of securing a wooden skewer to the back of the guitars with PVA glue.
Because I’ve got so many little bits and pieces in my craft stash (which don’t take up too much room, honestly, and you never know when they might come in handy and in this case they did), I found a glittery star brad which I just secured in place at the top of the veil because I’m a bit of a rock star!
They’ve been put away with all the other wedding things and whether or not they hold up until the big day is another question. I’m sure they’ll look alright on the day as long as you don’t look too close. Anyway, I saved myself $40 by doing it myself and that’s the most important thing to me. Now to disable my Pinterest account before I get too many other crazy ideas!
