Just when I thought I had everything organised for the wedding, I go and look at my wedding Facebook groups and see that all the other brides to be have bought tote bags for their bridal party attendants (maid of honour, bridesmaids etc) to carry all their attire to get ready for the wedding day.
The worst thing I can do sometimes is see what all these other wonderful brides to be are up to and think I must have the same. When I starting searching online, all these bridal party tote bags were at least $20 each for something a little bit nice. Not in the budget so I decided to create my own.
Now, I’m going to be honest right from the start and say I didn’t make these bags. I probably did have enough fabric in my stash to sew them myself and that was the original plan but I just happened to walk past these cotton tote bags at my local discount department store and I thought they were really cute and would save me a bunch of time. There are plenty of tutorials online on how to sew a simple tote bag with handles and here’s just 35 of them in one post from Threading My Way.
I just couldn’t justify the extra time I would spend sewing them for just $2 EACH! Bargain!

I picked up the rhinestone iron on transfers online for a couple dollars each. I’m having a long time family friend (like a sister to us) as my Matron of Honour, my 10 year old daughter as a bridesmaid and my husband to be’s 13 year old daughter as my other bridesmaid. These transfers are really easy to iron on and add just a little bling to the bag.

I picked a contrasting coloured fabric from my stash, measured the iron on transfer against to gauge the size I’d need and cut out ‘oblong’ type shapes. (Not very even I might add. I should’ve taken the time to create a template from cardboard for a better finish but they still worked out okay.)

I sewed a bit of lilac coloured lace around the edge and as you can see, not exactly even or straight.

I could’ve started again but once I placed the rhinestone transfer against it, it didn’t look too bad.

I felt it needed an embellishment and it was suggested I crochet a flower to sew on but my crochet supplies are all in the shed and I think finding them would be a much bigger effort than actually crocheting one. I found this tutorial to make fabric flowers from Crazy Little Projects which only took a couple minutes with the glue gun.

I also added a bit of gathered lace and a diamante brad plus some ribbon and these two heart shaped buttons to the flower, all things I had in my stash. See, if you hang onto these things long enough, they’ll eventually become useful. I think I had these buttons for another project when my girl (now 10) was a baby. At least buttons don’t take up much room!

So for the price of the bag at $2, the iron on transfer for about $2 and all the other bits and pieces from my stash I got away with making three of these bags for less than $5 each.

A lot better price than at least $20 per bag. It’s a little memento from the day for the girls and more importantly, something to carry their shoes, underwear, jewellry and other bits and pieces for the wedding.

Even if you’re not a keen sewer, it doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy all these bits and pieces brand new. You’ll often find brand new buttons, rolls of ribbon and other craft supplies from thrift stores.

I’ve bought a whole brand new roll of ivory ribbon for the wedding car and so many other things for the wedding for sometimes 50 cents each from the thrift store. It’s an absolute gold mine when it comes to wedding craft supplies.
