I took the kids out of school a week earlier than their scheduled break up for a week’s vacation to Rainbow Beach. We set off on Saturday morning and it took just over 3 hours to get there after a short stop midway for us all to stretch our legs.

We had two stowaways with us this time. Our two dogs, Willy the Mini Pinscher and Bonnie, the matriarch of the family, a Mini Fox Terrier. In the past, my mother had always dog sitted for us but we couldn’t rely on her this time. I found pet friendly accommodation so they could come with us. A little challenging at times because Willy is so nervous and couldn’t get used to his temporary home. They whimpered a bit in the car too but once they were asleep they were okay. I felt better that they were with us at least.

I grew up having beach holidays but I don’t feel at ease on my own with the kids at the beach. I’d rather they jumped around all day in a swimming pool so we secured a house with a pool. It was a weird configuration but very comfortable with a lovely view of the beach and Fraser Island.

There was plenty of splashing about in the pool.

One morning we travelled to Tin Can Bay, a small town nearby, to feed the wild dolphins. That was something I’ve wanted to do all my life and I was so glad I could share the experience with the kids.

In the afternoons the local birdlife would come for a cool off in the pool. It was so lovely to sit and watch.

While visiting friends, who were also staying up there for the week, we noticed a large goanna slinking around in the backyard.

The ‘beach’ house was a bit too large for us but clean and comfortable. Would’ve been better suited to a large family with older children but it was well affordable and with all the creature comforts of home.

Except for 2 days of a bit of rain and windy conditions, the weather was perfect and not too hot. The trip up was a little long for the dogs but the kids managed well. A lovely holiday and definitely a time for me to relax and think about nothing else but relaxing, oh and the kids.
