I laugh at the fact that the supermarkets here in Australia are going ‘plastic free’. I can remember as a child Mum always brought the groceries home in paper bags. That paper was invaluable for so many things around the home. I don’t remember anyone asking us if we wanted to go to using plastic but here we are. Going back to “plastic free”. I can’t help but think the damage has already been done. Anyway, if you want to know of a few easy alternatives to buying shopping bags from the supermarket, here are 7 DIY alternatives to plastic shopping bags.
This is a video for a no sew shopping bag from an old tshirt. Remember to make them in various sized tshirts as you don’t want to fill a large bag with heavy items as you won’t be able to carry it.
The following are made with basic sewing or crochet skills. Make them from old fabric like curtains, pillow cases, doona covers, sheets and other scrap fabric. You might be able to find fabric from thrift shops that will be suitable.
Don’t forget about the produce bags. Instead of using the plastic bags the store provides, you can make your own from tuile, sheer curtains and any other sheer fabric. You can also buy some here.
