Let me start by saying I LOVE TO BAKE and a cake would have to be one of my favourite things to bake but we all lead such busy lives and sometimes a supermarket mud cake (or any ready made cake) can be a lifesaver for some. They’re great to enjoy as is but with a few extra things, you can simply ‘jazz up’ a supermarket mud cake in no time at all and amaze your family and friends.
And, don’t forget, they’re pretty good on their own. For less than $5 (even better when marked down – I pop them in the freezer for an emergency) you’ll get a pretty nice tasty cake with a rich, fondant icing that everyone loves. They’ve become a bit of an Aussie icon.
Extras you might need
If you’re buying the cake it means you probably don’t have time to make icing or pipe fancy decorations onto the cake so grab some extras from the supermarket while you’re there.
- Ready made icing/frosting.
- Chocolate and cream to make ganache.
- Fresh or canned fruit can totally transform a plain flavoured cake.
- Ice cream. Top or fill with your favourite ice cream. Just melt and set back in a cake tin the same size as the cake. Once frozen, split the cake and fill with the re-frozen ice cream.
- Cream cheese. Flavour simple homebrand cream cheese with icing sugar and a little lemon juice and top or fill with cream cheese icing.
- Mousse. Top or fill with instant or ready made mousse for an extra indulgence.
- Top’N’Fill Instant Caramel. How indulgent would a a caramel mudcake be with even more luscious caramel. Split the cake and fill with the instant caramel and/or whipped cream.
- Nuts are an instant way to give your cake another flavour sensation.
- Chocolate bars which can be cut up or crumbled to top the cake.
- Cookies/biscuits which can also be crumbled to broken up to fill or decorate the cake.
- Lollies/Candy let your mind go crazy with the array of lollies/candy available in the confectionery aisle.
- Cream or ready made whipped cream this can also be flavoured with your favourite liquor for an ‘adults only’ cake. Sprinkle a little more alcohol onto the actual cake too.
- Cake decorations from the cake making aisle come in all shapes and sizes and take the hard work out of cake decorating.
- Coloured fondant is just like working with playdough – roll it out and cover the cake. Your friends won’t believe that it’s a supermarket mud cake lurking underneath.
- Don’t forget the candles. They come in all shapes and sizes now and can really help to give your cake the ‘wow’ factor.
- Fresh flowers. Be sure to give them a good rinse if you’re not sure whether they’ve been sprayed with pesticides or use fake flowers.
- Cake toppers like “Happy Birthday”, “Happy Anniversary” etc.
- Ribbons and bows. All sorts of ribbons, trims, bunting and other things can help to decorate the cake.
- Toys. If you’re cake is for a child’s birthday, grab their favourite toys (after a wash of course) and that can be the theme of your cake. Think of their favourite movie, Lego toy, cartoon character, ponies, pet shops, trucks, cars, monsters, dolls etc.
