Today is Australia’s biggest horse racing event of the year. It’s like the Kentucky Derby of the US. The Royal Ascot of the UK. It’s the Melbourne Cup. A horse race of 24 horses from all over the world, racing for over $6,000,000 in prize money. Ever since I can remember, it is a race that the stops the nation and everyone stops what they’re doing to watch 3 minutes of horse racing.

When I worked, we always had a casual lunch before the race, usually of hot chicken, prawns and salads or sometimes just pizza. Friends have hosted lunch at their homes or Mum had many Melbourne Cup luncheons at her place. I even took the day off work to go to the horse races here in Brisbane a couple of times. But if you can’t make it to Flemington racecourse in Melbourne for the actual race meeting with the other 100,000 people, you can attend a hotel, pub or club Melbourne Cup Luncheon which is what I’ll be doing today.
2013 MELBOURNE CUP

My next door neighbour was so kind to invite me to attend the luncheon at our local sporting club with her gym friends. I haven’t been to a luncheon for a few years so I’m looking forward to it. Its a chance to dress up and have a few laughs.  It won’t be a big day. I’ll still have to collect the children from school and lucky this club is in between their schools. You can keep an eye on the food I’ll be having plus fun and games over on Instagram.

I bought myself a fascinator for the first time in my life. In all the times I’ve been to the races and Melbourne Cup functions, I’ve never worn a hat or fascinator and I was lucky to pick one up on sale from my local craft store for $11 (normally $40).

To tell you the truth, I haven’t been following the horse racing for years so couldn’t even tell you who was running this year. Here is the form guide, in case you need to know who’s running but my son has chosen Red Cadeaux and my daughter, Foreteller. We’ll see how they go. If you’re celebrating Melbourne Cup this year or are going to the track, have heaps of fun. Remember to keep a pair of flats in your handbag. No one wants to see you walking out with your shoes in your hand. Its usually a big day for the uninitiated punters!
